Chokers or Nums

Approximate Cost: $7,000 – $15,000 per pair

Speed Reduction: 3–6 mph

Definition: A choker is a pair of mid-block curb extensions that narrow the width of the travel way, thereby reducing motorists’ speed. Chokers increase pedestrian safety, space by both reducing the crossing distance and improving the line–of– site between pedestrians and vehicle operation. Additionally, space they created visual narrowing of the roadway, which typically results in the vehicle speed reductions. Pedestrian safety is enhanced when chokers are used in conjunction with other measures.
